GST on insurance in 2026: what you pay and what you do not
By Ankeet Bahety ยท 17 Oct 2026
Since 22 September 2025, premiums for individual health insurance and individual life insurance carry no GST. Other insurance still carries 18%.
| Type of policy | GST |
|---|---|
| Individual health insurance (family floater, senior citizen, top-up, critical illness, personal accident) | 0% |
| Individual life insurance (term, endowment, ULIP, pension) | 0% |
| Motor insurance | 18% |
| Group health insurance through an employer | 18% |
| Group life insurance | 18% |
What it means for you
- Your renewal premium for an individual health or life policy no longer has GST added.
- When you compare quotes, compare the final amount payable.
- If you rely only on your employer's group health cover, remember it ends when you leave the job. An individual policy is now cheaper to hold alongside it.
